“I have MD (muscular dystrophy), which is pretty lousy. When I was 13, I fell and broke my femur, which made me dependant on assistive technology earlier than I might have been. The first time I heard about the iBOT® was at the same time that I was planning to switch to a power chair. My younger brother, who is into every cool technology, saw the iBOT® on a National Geographic for Kids program. I was immediately attracted to the iBOT® because it allowed me to be more active than other power chairs, which can be really limiting.
 

When I first showed up at school with the

iBOT® , my classmates did not think much of it. After I switched to the Balance mode, though, everybody’s eyes turned to me and questions started pouring in. Actually, the iBOT® has given me the chance to make new friends. I am now able to do more and go to places I wasn’t able to go before. For example, my friend’s house was not accessible. Well, now it is, because I can access his room on the second floor without any difficulties. I feel just like a “normal” kid. I also went to a school dance for the first time. I was not much of dancer before, but I lasted a good 45 minutes on the dance floor. It was so neat because I felt like a part of the scene.
 

All of my family has been involved in my learning how to use the iBOT® . I am an avid swimmer, so my parents decided to take me vacationing near a lake, where I was able to take my iBOT® across the beach and right to the edge of the water. That’s one of the best things that iBOT® does for me, it allows me to do stuff I love. It’s a really great invention and a great experience owning it. I feel more confident now, sometimes too confident maybe, because now my parents say I go out too much.”
